The following are among the many important contributions
that the Consortium on Children's Asthma Camps has made for
children and families:
- supporting the development of new camps and the national
growth in the number of asthma camps, including initiatives
that provide high-risk, inner-city children with the opportunity
to attend camp;
- developing and demonstrating the Inner-city Asthma Initiative,
providing effective asthma education and management tailored
to the needs of inner-city children;
- providing education for asthma camp leaders from the medical
community, including training sessions at the American Lung
Association and the American Thoracic Society annual meetings during
the past two years on topic areas that include operational
guidelines, staffing, fundraising, addressing children's
behavior problems, and establishing a positive camp climate;
- developing Asthma Roadways, a unique program that empowers
low-income families to work together to improve their understanding
of, communication about, and management of a child's asthma
by setting and implementing individualized goals for asthma
management;
- and, providing asthma camps with uniform standards for
educational goals and overall operations.
