Description: American Lung Association's, Camp WheezeAway is a summer camp held for children with moderate to severe asthma. It is now in its 18th year and will be held June 28,009-July2, 2009. Children enjoy all the normal activities of a summer camp, swimming, horseback riding, canoeing, fishing and arts and crafts while under the watchful eyes of 24 hour volunteer medical staff including physicians, RN's, nurse practitioners, PA's, LPN's, Pharmacists and other health care professionals. Each day they receive formal and hands-on asthma education. Camp WheezeAway can provide priceless memories for children and their caregivers. Description: The Young Teen Asthma Camp is in its seventh year. It is a residential camp held at Camp Winnataska near Birmingham, AL. The activities for teens ages 12-16 include swimming, crafts, hiking and games, canoeing and even horseback riding! The best of asthma education is given using Power Breathing for Teens (AAFA) presented by nurse practitioners. Findings from the camp show increased responsibility, self-care and resilience in participants. Campers and parents alike universally say it is great fun! 15-16 year olds may serve as leaders in training (LIT) for regular camp. Camperships are available.
