Asthma Action Plans assist you and your child in managing
their asthma. Action Plans are based on your child's "personal
best" peak flow readings and "zones" of lung
function. They allow you and your child to manage most asthma
exacerbations as well as assist you in predicting a possible
change in your child's asthma status.
Action Plans use a "step-wise" approach to asthma
management. That means that you can "step-up" your
child's medications when they are showing signs of a potential
problem and you can "step-down" their medications
when the problem passes.
Action Plans are particularly helpful in preventing multiple
visits to the emergency room. It is very important that you
and your child follow the plan as written by your asthma health
care provider. Communication with your health care provider
is an important part of using the Asthma Action Plan.
