The Consortium on Children's Asthma Camps

Founded in 1988, the Consortium has taken an important role in coordinating the activities of asthma camps nationwide, promoting the quality of medical care and asthma education, and advancing the positive impact of the camps on the lives of children with asthma.

The mission of the consortium is:

  • Promote the quality of medical care delivered at existing asthma camps.

  • Provide parameters for asthma education; to promote the development of new asthma camps.

  • Develop initiatives to target high-risk children and give them the opportunity to attend asthma camp.

Testimonial:
I have been involved in Camp Not-A-Wheeze in Arizona since 1989. I have served in every capacity since that time, including working as a volunteer in a cabin supervising asthmatic children in their daily activities. I served for 6 years as the lead Respiratory Therapist in the infirmary. This entailed scheduling the shifts for our infirmary, procuring and stocking with medications and equipment, and working to ensure that each child that comes thru gets the medical treatment needed.

I am currently working as an Asthma Educator at camp. Each day, the children participate with me and other therapist to learn more about their asthma and how to manage and treat their symptoms. I work closely with the other committee members to develop and implement the daily lesson plan for this each day at camp.

Finally, I have served on the Camp Not-A-Wheeze Planning Committee for over 16 years now. My role has again been varied over the years, from confirming and accepting medical applications for children, confirming and accepting applications for medical volunteers and developing and implementing forms and packets for campers and staff. I also work in a fundraising capacity, securing equipment, medications, monies and giveaways.

In doing this over the past 20 plus years, I obviously see the benefits it brings to the children. I have seen their faces when they spend a week at a camp that they might not otherwise be able to do because of their condition. As an asthmatic myself, I understand what it means to be able to spend time with others who can enjoy the same activities together and not worry about the medical compromises asthma presents. I have watched campers in the past grow up to become medical professionals themselves, and it’s due to Camp Not-A-Wheeze. The mentoring I am able to provide is priceless. As a medical professional, it makes me proud to be a part of something so invaluable to the children, and to some degree the medical volunteers. I would not have done this as long as I have had it not been for the rewards that I receive on such a personal and professional level.

Sincerely,
William (Bill) Grimm
